Survey: Majority Muslims Want Role of Islam in World Politics
The majority of Muslims around the world welcomed the significant role of Islam in the political life of his country. Thus the results of a recent survey from the Pew Research Center, told the LA Times last week. However, Muslims have a different attitude towards groups such as Hamas and Hezbollah.
According to the survey, the majority Muslims in Pakistan, Egypt, Jordan, and Nigeria want to change the existing legal system with punishments such as stoning allow for adultery, cutting hands for thieves, and the death penalty for those who are apostates.
About 85% of Muslims said Pakistan would support the rule that separates men and women in the workplace.
Muslims in Indonesia, Egypt, Nigeria, and Jordan among the most enthusiastic. More than three-quarters of respondents in these countries is a positive rate if Islam has an influence in politics. According to them, is a bad thing if Islam holds a small role in politics. Muslim Turkey is the most split stance. More than half have a positive outlook if the Islamic influence in politics. Turkey in recent years struggled to balance their secular political system with a number of religious Muslims who continue to rise. Many Muslims in the country depicting their struggle between the moderate fundamentalist groups, particularly those who feel threatened by the rise of conservatism. |
Among the respondents who describe this struggle, mostly in favor of the moderates. This happened in Lebanon and Turkey, respectively 84 and 74 percent. They call themselves as moderate as opposed to the fundamentalists.
In Egypt and Nigeria, however, more that menginkan the reverse direction. According to the survey, 59 percent in Egypt and 58 percent in Nigeria which describes the struggle of a group call themselves fundamentalists.
Despite the overall positive outlook if Islam was involved in the political system, they split about groups like Hamas and Hezbollah. Both groups received the strong support of respondents in Jordan and Lebanon. While in Muslim countries that do not have close links both the history and culture with the Palestinians, such as Pakistan and Turkey, respondents tend to judge negative Hamas and Hezbollah.
Alkaidah groups get strong disapproval from the majority of respondents in all Muslim countries, except Nigeria, where 49 percent of respondents gave the word to agree.
Survey conducted 12 April to 7 May at seven countries with the largest Muslim population. About eight thousand people go through live interviews. This survey has a margin of error of plus minus 3 percent for Pakistan, and 4 percent for other countries.
